I’ve just released a similar project not realising you had already done it! Mine is focused on just the stereographic projection to create the Little Planet effect and uses a different algorithm so you can get smooth warping between the planet and tunnel views by changing the latitude offset.

I don’t think that this alone could texture a model. yet the next article shows an interaction between projection and 3D.
