very unlikely.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would the NFT expansion have happened anyway, it\u2019s reasonable to think so, a dynamic was on its way for a while (and for good reasons), there was this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiny <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ecological concern at first that found a reasonable compromise by replacing the blockchains using PoW (Bitcoin and Etherum) with a blockchain using PoS (Tezos).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after of course, the Beeple sale\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/b-20-token-price-beeple-1965853\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">varnish started cracking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as we put it in french (the sale<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appeared for what it was<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crypto-stunt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) but this was of no importance, a new paradigm was on its way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My position on the subject of cryptocurrencies has not changed and is broadly aligned with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/smdiehl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen Diehl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/podcast\/web3-is-a-scam-not-a-revolution-w-stephen-diehl\/id1507621076?i=1000544403873\">the podcast<\/a>\u00a0(and, yes, you should follow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/techwontsaveus\">Tech won\u2019t save us<\/a>!) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept of cryptocurrencies (supranational deregulated money) goes against all my convictions, beyond their ecological impact, beyond the underlying techno-libertarian ideology willing to turn everything into a product and everyone into a company, they\u2019re \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a solution in search of a problem<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, they solve nothing that can\u2019t be solved otherwise in more effective ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;re intrinsically broken ; the PoW gives power to the already powerful (entities with the biggest compute power take the cake and get rewarded), the PoS gives power to the wealthiest (the more Stakes you hold, the more likely you are to validate and get a split of the next transaction).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto assets are a zero-sum game: in short, you need people to invest actual (fiat) money if you want to earn something. That&#8217;s why the crypto enthusiasts are so loud: they need other people to invest funds into the cryptocurrency to increase its value. You can think of it as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyramid_scheme\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pyramid scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because it is one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the attention economy meets the FOMO economy\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that NFTs are backed by crypto assets plays on a positive bias that leads artists and buyers to believe they&#8217;ll gain more than they invest, it creates a form of addiction that is very comparable to gambling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited series and auctions act as a gambling mechanic (bets) which &#8211; associated with the impossibility to get the positive feedback produced by the compulsive buying of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; creates a strong Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FOMO is the mechanism that powers the Crypto\/Web3 economic model.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Attention_economy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for granted as everything will happen in closed rooms (metaverse, app, social media\u2026), where everyone will know what others possess, thanks to the transparent ledger (the backbone of blockchains). Ultimately, everything (good and services) should become a FOMO-driven pay-to-play slot machine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phenomenon is made possible and reinforced by the fact that \u201cit\u2019s not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actual<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> money\u201d, once you\u2019ve converted some fiat money into a crypto currency, it becomes like trading <\/span><b>marbles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a schoolyard. The value of a marble is not based on real economy (anyway,\u00a0 parents usually pay for it) but rather <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agreed upon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the schoolyard, often based on its <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scarcity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, as a kid, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cwater drop-galaxy-petroleum\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> marbles were extremely rare (I\u2019ve seen only a handful of them in my lifetime), you could trade them for basically anything, from large amounts of lesser valued marbles to bigger toys that had nothing to do with marbles.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This value is highly volatile and over the course of 3 weeks &#8211; a lifetime in a schoolyard &#8211; a given type of marble could skyrocket or crash down on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">market<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with no relation to their intrinsic value.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe winner takes it all\u201d (ABBA).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well known artists that played along are the main beneficiaries of this dynamic. If you don\u2019t already have a solid network of artists and potential buyers, <\/span><b>don\u2019t quit your day job<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think this caused a lot of harm amongst newcomers already but I witnessed fine people turning into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brands <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or what qualifies as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gurus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the logical next step is to create Personal Tokens (it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/61699\/this-crypto-entrepreneur-just-sold-20000-worth-of-personal-tokens-on-ethereum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already a thing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The merchandisation of an artistic production pushes artists to be easily identifiable as \u201cthe person who does X\u201d and, should success happen, they tend to reproduce and develop the \u2018style\u2019 that worked or at least explore less and take less risks which &#8211; imho &#8211; impacts their overall creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmilking the sacred cow\u201d (Dead Kenndys)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creative coding is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slides.com\/nicolasbarradeau\/it-s-dangerous-to-go-alone-take-this#\/2\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very broad topic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When I started <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grow.paris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I wanted to show how rich the creative coding field was and invited people who use code to make art in all possible directions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a (fine-arts) student, one of my teachers kept repeating \u201cthe most useful tool is the trash bin\u201d which translates to \u201cuncurated generator outcomes are trash\u201d. With this new <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paradigm<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is tempting for the community to reuse the same old tricks and create series, it\u2019s rarely interesting as the pieces are not meant to work as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s often openly aimed at selling or increasing the mediatic surface and always produces a lot of noise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cterritorial pissing\u201d (Nirvana)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collectors\u2019 side:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I got my hands on X from Y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m SO excited to have bought Z on secondary<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re an appreciative collector who supports artists, \u201csupporting artists\u201d is the payload. Spending money is not a skill, so toss your coin and be quiet about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artists\u2019 side:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people I immensely respect unearthed decades old sketches to mint them as NFTs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what? you may wonder, well that\u2019s the closest we had to a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cultural heritage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you saw a given piece of procedural \/ generative animation or artwork, you\u2019d <\/span><b>know <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who did it and there was no way one could possibly claim the ownership without being debunked and frowned upon (at best). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This involves and favors a sense of community, liability, awareness, modesty and respect.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replacing this dynamic with a transparent, disembodied, trustless and merchant transaction makes me utterly sad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copycats &amp; scalpers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copycats: usurp artists&#8217; identity and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mint) copies of their artworks in their stead.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scalpers: bots that collect items on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> market in order to resell them on the secondary market with a bonus (on fxHash, I saw a casual x 2000 for a piece by Casey Reas).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seriously, fuck these guys.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pinky swear<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most countries, there are ways to certify the intellectual property of a given item, even in its digital form. It&#8217;s tedious but if someone tries to steal your work, you can bring your case to court and win.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fun fact<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: in France, it would cost me 15\u20ac and I\u2019d have to send 2 copies of the artwork, by mail, to the <\/span><b>SCAM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (I kid you not: <\/span><b>S<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oci\u00e9t\u00e9 <\/span><b>C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ivile des <\/span><b>A<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uteurs <\/span><b>M<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultim\u00e9dia)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The notion of intellectual property doesn\u2019t exists in the NFT world, yet again, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/04\/nfts-werent-supposed-end-like\/618488\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is fundamentally broken and doesn\u2019t solve anything<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (says the NFT inventor), and certainly not the ownership of a digital asset hence the &#8211; rather funny &#8211; \u201cright-click\u201d meme that makes some crypto bros &amp; sis lose it.<br \/>\nOn a side note, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_rights_management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DRMs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> address the ownership of digital items (if you\u2019re old enough to know what it is).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a schoolyard, this is called <strong>pinky swear<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so, in essence a NFT is <\/span><b>trading marbles for a pinky promise<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[ I could go on and on and on ]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was so appalled, so pissed, sad and even angry at some friends for not seeing things as I did\u2026 This is a house of cards and by no means a long term solution to&#8230; anything! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was already aggressively blocking advertising (like \u201ccustom chrome extension on top of all possible ad-blockers\u201d aggressively) so I added a couple more keywords and my twitter fell almost silent and it felt good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I got very busy with my work at the GAC lab and didn\u2019t have time to research further, everything I read made me physically sick anyway.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming to terms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of 2021, 8 months later, things had <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunk in<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a bit and I came back to the subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously the first step was to remove the filters from my twitter feed, the spring craze had vanished, it was easier to breeze, I found people more casual about the whole NFT thing.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HEN (hic et nunc) had become the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de facto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform for Artistic NFTs, they had pulled off something rather impressive, hundreds of thousands of artworks lived on the platform despite numerous shortcomings. As expected, It was Deviant Art with price tags but it worked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mid november 2021, the platform abruptly shut down for many reasons. Matt DesLauriers wrote an informed and balanced article about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the incident<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mattdesl.substack.com\/p\/hicetnunc-and-the-merits-of-web3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hicetnunc and the Merits of Web3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The main point is that, unlike when a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">web2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform shuts down, alternative websites could make the contents accessible shortly after HEN went down, which somehow advocates favorably for Web3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It still find the:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI do believe Rafael cared about the art and a social cause, but was constantly distracted and eventually worn out by people calling him names, belittling him, and harassing him to give up his website to the \u2018community.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/violet_forest\/status\/1461000721504088064\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Violet_Forest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ipfs.io\/ipfs\/QmWpZMDsky33jqiDVG7ptjw269uKRhCEKGHofKtjjnoyXS\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a bit hard to take.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmoney\u201d (Pink Floyd)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I learnt about what money is and realized how little I knew about the subject (I liked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtpelerin.com\/blog\/what-is-money\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this intro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). I learnt about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nixon_shock\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Nixon Shock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">original sin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the modern economy. I discovered the various faces and use cases of cryptocurrencies (utility tokens, payment tokens, stablecoins, asset tokens\u2026), this helped me understand that it\u2019s more subtle than just a massive scam and though I still see it as a convenient way to circumvent regulations, I can understand why people believe (and invest) in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also confirmed that I\u2019ll never be a banker and the key takeaway is: <\/span><b>\u201cdo not invest what you can\u2019t afford to lose\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art is special<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/podcast\/web3-is-a-scam-not-a-revolution-w-stephen-diehl\/id1507621076?i=1000544403873\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">podcast by Stephen Diehl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around minute 34, he compares the crypto assets to the traditional economy system, with the monetary, security and commodity classes then he adds a fourth class: \u201cthe alternatives: art.\u201d which value depends on \u201cwhatever someone is going to pay for it\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m French and Art is a religion in my country. When I say it\u2019s a religion, I mean an actual religion with cathedrals, churches, saints, temples, priests, ceremonies and gatekeepers. We are often seen as pedantic but we\u2019re just culturally biased, this allowed for memorable discussions about \u201cwhat is art\u201d. In my case it\u2019s even worse: having been a fine-arts student, I make a clear distinction between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on one hand and: \u201cgraphic design \/ illustration \/ other creative activities\u201d. I may be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creative <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but I am not an artist: my work is not to make art and to that extent, most people in the NFT space are not artists either, they\u2019re hobbyists (which is fine). For convenience, I now use the label\u00a0<em>artists<\/em> in a broader sense, like everyone else in that space.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this to say that buying Art in France is encouraged and up to 100% of any artwork one buys is deducted from their taxes, the \u201cNFT art is a money laundering machine\u201d argument may be valid but it\u2019s a mere reflection of the pre-NFT art world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art lies a bit outside of the crypto\/web3 equation of doom. Speculative by nature, the art value has a long history of scandals, scams, frauds and trolls, nothing new here.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circa 2003, Damien Hirst famously bought back his own artworks to artificially increase their value. If hype artificially inflates the prices of something, if the market is still driven by big names, so long for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game changing promise<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of NFTs but also, \u201cso what?&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there on, I read a series of articles for and against NFTs to make a somewhat informed decision (they\u2019re listed at the bottom of the page) and as I was already sold to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">con clan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I tried to keep an open mind and see the glass half full.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mere-exposure_effect\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mere exposure effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, something ugly becomes familiar and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likable<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when you are regularly exposed to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This definitely played a role. When I was pissed, I\u2019d notice every mention of the word, roll my eyes and skip to the next message. Eight months later, the mechanic had been \u2018integrated\u2019, the \u2018user experience\u2019 of the NFTs\u2019 promotion was smoother. I got used to it and found it less ugly, like my grandparents&#8217; brown-ish wallpaper I got used to over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean NFTS are actually \u2026 clean.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after the first reads (Joannie, Memo), I understood that the Tezos transactions are light to compute and reasonably <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There is still an ecological impact of course, servers need to compute the transactions, servers need to serve the files but I guess this is how the internet works. I\u2019m not hosting my files yet but I may well start an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ipfs.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IPFS node<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to store and share my own works, just to know where the electricity comes from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also means I\u2019ll stick to Tezos, knowing how much of a shitstorm the other blockchains are, I can\u2019t decently trade in ETH or BTC or anything equally ecocidal. I know Etherum is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/developers\/docs\/consensus-mechanisms\/pos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supposed to switch to PoS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, until it\u2019s done, I\u2019ll stick to Tezos, really.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike crypto bros &amp; sis, artists question the medium, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/opinion\/nfts-environmentalism-1996006\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains how environmental concerns emerged in parallel to the rise of Art NFTs.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoanieLemercier\/status\/1481232060329177100\">Joannie Lemercier<\/a> is an example of integrity in that field.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artists making <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a living<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, serendipity and new faces<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even at my pissed-iest, I\u2019ve always been ok with one thing: crypto or not, artists get rewarded for their work and it\u2019s a good thing. I saw not only talented artists take off but also many people with qualitative daily works get noticed and validated or even become full time artists. This couldn\u2019t have happened in any other context.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why NFTs were invented, the state of affairs that kickstarted the NFTs adventure is that all the Tumblrs, Instagrams, Twitters, Facebooks would (very literally) feed on artists without giving back shit. These networks are based on the attention economy, they need fresh content to keep users hooked as long as possible to sell advertising. Without the artist&#8217;s contents, these platforms would appear for what they are: empty shells.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the reproaches I\u2019d gladly throw at NFTs is that they use <\/span><b>marbles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of actual (fiat) money. I don\u2019t like the idea of private collections yet for the past years, I tried to support artists by buying some of their pieces (usually prints). I\u2018m against all forms of accumulation and it hurts to think that the new pieces I\u2019d buy would end up in a garage instead of living their lives hanging on walls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every time I opened HEN, I found something that caught my eye and much more often than on Twitter (which is my only social network). The energy and the variety of the works really touched me and I felt stupid for not even taking a look earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also read an interview of Thierry Ehrmann (the guy from Artprice.com) who said that women, \u201cemergent countries&#8221; artists and street artists (ephemeral by nature) were benefiting from the NFT system, this moved me a lot and though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/nft-sales-just-16-percent-women-2030490\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things are not okay yet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re somehow improving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After realizing I hadn\u2019t spent a single cent on art for a whole year, clicking the \u2018like\u2019 button of twitter felt weird and the perspective of being able to send \u201csomething\u201d to someone in return for moving me with their work felt good, the best part being that the artworks live online and won\u2019t rot in my garage, I don\u2019t even own them!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what pushed me to open a crypto wallet and purchase some Tezos.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxhash.xyz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FX HASH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and family pressure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last nail in the coffin was Fx_Hash. It is a creative coding platform that uses the buyer\u2019s hash to seed a PRNG. Creative coding has been my passion for 20 years, I never considered myself an artist but a creative coder, most definitely! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have always been numerous REPL sandboxes around, the oldest I\u2019m aware of (and took part in circa 2010) was WonderFL, some of the best sketches still live on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beautifl.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/beautifl.net\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was in Flash, I was a Flash dev and Processing required a (poorly supported) Java plugin to run inside a web browser so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openprocessing.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/openprocessing.org\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a bit confidential (btw, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openprocessing.org\/crayon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they do NFTs too now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I learnt a lot from some of the mind boggling demos you could find there or more recently on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codepen.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codepen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shadertoy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadertoy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glitch.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and what not, the code is visible, it\u2019s important to discover, learn and improve. Plus,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ciphrd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@ciphrd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is very skilled, very reactive and makes a lot of right decisions fast to improve the platform. As more and more of my friends were giving fx_hash a spin, the FOMO got stronger because they\u2018re more than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cousins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This platform may well be the way for me to earn the <\/span><b><i>marbles <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that will let me reward other artists\u2019 work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finishing this long article<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">My early critics still hold true and I didn\u2019t turn into a crypto unicorn. The whole crypto thing is a zero-sum, pyramid scheme and I willingly injected money into it.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m not planning to inject more and I\u2019m not planning to convert anything back, anyway at the time of writing, the Tezos I bought 6 weeks ago lost ~55% of their value.
